The Kiran Foundation

The Kiran Foundation is a female only non-profit organisation that provides education and support to mothers and children in Pakistan. It is based in Lyari, Pakistan- which according to BBC news is one of Pakistan's most dangerous neighbourhoods. I conducted teacher training and began teaching my course at the school to girls between the ages of 14 to 27. While teaching these girls, they explained to me that due to certain tribal traditions girls over the age of 12 are often not allowed to attain an education and go out to work. This is why implementing my course in these schools and teaching girls to code is so important, as the nature of Computer Science related jobs is their ability to be done remotely. Therefore increasing the opportunities available to the girls and allowing them to gain financial independence, even if they are limited by social and cultural barriers.
The girls were particularly interested in the applications of python in animations and games and were very excited to be able to learn how to program their own cartoons and games while gaining financial independence. Allowing them to become active members of the economy and giving them voices in spaces that they have traditionally not had access to.
